WHAT MAKES A PORTFOLIO STAND OUT BETTER THAN THE REST?

Over the past couple of months, we’ve been chatting to our Bootcampers about their portfolios.
Notre Dame and UoW are prized contenders when med applications open as they offer applicants the potential to showcase themselves outside of academia.
It also allows applicants whose scores are fall within the “average” percentile to have a shot of getting into med school.
Now, med offers are out, which is awesome news.
So we’ve got a some of those applicants who had interviews and got in (woo hoo!) and then there’s a bunch who interviewed but just missed out.
So what made those applicants more desirable in the end?
Their interview performance, of course, needs to be taken into consideration but the portfolio weighs heavily (50% I believe) so we wanted to take a look into what made the difference.
Firstly, Notre Dame and Wollongong’s portfolios are different.
Notre Dame only has 3 criteria: Leadership, Service to Community/Church Involvement and Other Academic or Life Achievements.
Wollongong, on the other hand, has 6 criteria: Leadership, Capacity to Work with Others, Service Ethics, Diversity of Experience, High Level of Performance in an area of Human Endeavour and Academic Experience.
So how you compile your portfolio for each uni will differ.
Firstly, you should and I should say MUST fill in all the examples and not leave any blank. Don’t sell yourself short. This is the time to shine!
Secondly, you have only a minimum amount of words to describe your examples, learn how to articulate in a sophisticated manner.
Thirdly, review your application! Get someone to proofread it, how you read something, made come across completely different to another person, so make sure you have someone review before you hit submit
