What it’s like being the doctor in the family

I have a 2-year-old daughter, Ruby.

She’s the most amazing thing in the world.

And she’s also the most active thing in the world.

If you know much about toddlers, you’ll know they’re here, there and everywhere.

There was a great meme on Facebook that said something like; having a toddler is like a blender without the lid on.

So true.

Needless to say, Ruby falls over a lot.

Mare and I used to freak out because she often hits her head. Being first-time parents, we were a bit jumpy and overprotective.

But it’s normal – for us to freak out and for Ruby to fall over and bump her head – a lot.

But this weekend was something else.

It was the biggest bump yet. I’ve never seen her smash her head like that before.

She was running full speed, tripped, and hit her forehead on the edge of a door frame.

And she must have sliced open a vein under the skin because within about 60 seconds she had a golfball-sized lump right in the center of her forehead.

The thing wouldn’t stop growing.

I thought her head was going to explore

Everyone freaked out.

Luckily, my dad and I were there.

Being doctors we quickly got to action.

We tried to ice it. But there was no way Ruby was going to let us put freezing cold ice on her sore, and about to explore, forehead.

Then my dad pulled out a bandage and wrapped her head uptight. Putting pressure on the lump before she grew into a full-sized unicorn.

Then I just held and hugged Ruby until she stopped crying.

It was OK.

Crisis averted.

My Dad and I quickly assessed that there were no serious injuries and the lump was a normal reaction.

And it got me thinking, what would we have done if there weren’t any doctors in the family.

We’d be rushing off to the ED or calling an ambulance. I know my inlaws would have done that.

I regularly speak to GAMSAT candidates who want to become doctors because they want to be the doctor in the family.

Often it’s because they had a family member pass away, or fall ill. But they couldn’t do anything and felt really helpless. It’s a terrible and frightening experience.

They want to make sure it never happens again. They want to prevent others from going through what they had to and also be able to look after their own family when they need it.

I can tell you it’s a great feeling to be able to do that. I feel blessed knowing that I have the knowledge and skill to do so.
