WHAT IS AN MMI AND HOW CAN I PREPARE FOR IT

We’re counting down the days until the GEMSAS interview offers are out and I’m getting lots of questions about the interview and what an MMI is and how the hell do I prepare for it.
The MMI is just, if not, more important than the actual GAMSAT as it is the gateway that stands between you and medical school entry. This chance doesn’t come very easily and ultimately plays a very large component in receiving offers.
But what is an MMI?
MMIs are a series of short interviews usually lasting between 5-7 minutes. Applicants move between stations (6-8 in total) and are required to discuss scenarios or issues with one or more interviewer. The MMI slightly varies between each university but the aim is to assess the applicants non-academic or soft skills such as empathy, integrity, verbal communications and adaptability.
Out of the GEMSAS Consortium, all universities EXCEPT for UQ have MMI’s.
As of 2019, the University of Queensland will introduce MMIs apart of their admission procedure into post-graduate medicine…but let’s not worry about that for now.
How do I prepare for an MMI?
This is an important question because it’s different yet similar to a regular interview but you’re put under time constraints and have explicit scenario questions that you may or may not have thought about before, so preparing in advance but also expecting the unexpected is vital.
