Loved the “Walking Dead” series.

And now there’s a GAMSAT version…Yay!

The newest character in Dr. Tom’s list of GAMSAT-Ghouls is the Practice Question Zombie.

Perhaps you’ve seen them…

Mindlessly roaming the internet murmuring, “practice questions….just do more practice questions….”

They will thoughtlessly throw themselves at and devour any and all practice questions and tests.

Feeding off them.

Always wanting more.

Thinking they will help.

But never being satisfied and never leaving the ranks of the GAMSAT Walking Dead.

How did they become the GAMSAT Undead?

Well,

Back when they were still alive, many of them tried to study for the GAMSAT.

They happily covered Physics, Chem, and Bio.

But after lots of effort it “didn’t work”, they’ll tell you.

They got a bad score.

They felt hopeless.

Dead inside.

Almost gave up.

But then they came back to life.

They were in some forum or Facebook group and heard that the GAMSAT is not a knowledge-based test but a test of skills, and doing lots of practice questions is the key.

Lots and lots of questions.

Thus the spell was cast, the virus was spread, the planets lined up (each Zombie series or movie has a different take on it)

Essentially, they crawled out of their GAMSAT graves and joined the GAMSAT Walking Dead roaming the wilderness of Facebook and Gumtree in search of more practice questions.

Never being satisfied.

Always hungry.

Problems is,

The more questions they do, the more problems they uncover…

They keep getting questions wrong.

They can’t seem to improve.

Their list of issues and things they can’t do continues to grow

And their hunger for more questions only grows deeper.

Instead of engaging their minds (they are Zombies after all) and realizing that this approach doesn’t work, they continue to think more brains – I mean, practice questions – will help.

So they’re never satisfied and they never improve.

But there is a cure to the GAMSAT Zombie.

And it’s simpler than most people think.

But it doesn’t work for everyone.

Some of the GAMSAT Undead are too far gone.

They’re like those Zombies with their lower half gone and it’s just their upper body crawling around the internet looking for more.

Some haven’t heard of or seen what the Zombies are capable of.

They don’t understand the horrific nature of what it means.

They will not understand and they are not yet ready.

But if you’ve seen the horror or you’ve been bitten but are not so far gone that you can’t see the error of your ways,

Then proceed carefully…

The solution starts off with not getting the virus, not getting bitten.

You do that by ignoring what the other Practice Question Zombies out there keep saying.

Then you (plus those already infected) need to accept the fact that practice questions and tests don’t develop the skills being tested in the exam, they test them.

If you don’t have the skills, you won’t develop them on the questions.

You’ll just keep getting them wrong.

It’s like saying I’m going to do my final uni exam over and over again without any study and hopefully I’ll improve – that makes no sense!

Instead, you need to develop the skills first.

And that does not mean studying the textbooks in between practice questions.

And how do you develop them without just memorizing and studying text (which doesn’t help and is a complete waste of time)?
