Eeny, meeny, miny, moe – The official selection process for med school

Eeny, meeny, miny, moe – The official selection process for med school

We help our Bootcamp members with their applications and interviews each year…

And I’ll tell ya what, mate…

This COVID pandemic has thrown a serious spanner in the works.

It seems like some of the medical schools (I won’t say which one’s because I’m on shaky ground with some of them as it is) have seemingly gone bonkers with their selection process.

“Eeny, meeny, miny, moe” would almost be a more logical selection process than what they’re doing instead.

Seriously.

That’s just another reason why this year is/was potentially the greatest opportunity to get into postgraduate medical school that has ever been.

And next year is shaping up to be a close second.

Oh, I can’t resist…

I’ll give you one example of the crazy application processes this year.

USyd.

Firstly, they canceled interviews this year.

Big call, but fair enough.

No contact and all.

But then they’ve gone and said that GPA won’t even be used to rank candidates.

(Your undergraduate GPA has been shown in numerous studies to be the best indicator of success in medical school – but to hell with that!)

It was pretty much just a hurdle at USyd.

Then they ranked you based on “each section of the GAMSAT” – whatever that meant.

So pretty much…

Don’t like interviews?

Worried about your GPA?

Worry no more!

USyd will help a sister out.

Then there are the universities that did run interviews this year. What they ended up doing was almost as strange.

People with high GAMSAT scores are not getting interviews…

People with lower ones getting them(?)…

Interviews being held with no interviewers present – just you talking into the camera with your answers recorded for someone to watch and score later.

Crazy times.

And truth is, it may not be any better for March 2021.

That’s why I love to focus on the principles with my Bootcampers.

The principles of high-quality GAMSAT preparation,

The principles of submitting your applications to ensure an interview,

And the principles of high-quality interview preparation.

Because if you have the principles, it doesn’t matter what the context or situation is, you’ll be able to adapt and thrive.

You still need to do the work…

But if you do what my team will show you here, and work your tail off applying it, then there is pretty much nothing that CV19, the GAMSAT, Daniel Andrews, or Donald Trump can throw at you that will stop you from achieving your dreams this time.

And with the USyd-Esque devil-may-care attitude to the selection process this year (a sign of things to come in the future of GAMSAT?), you’d be crazy not to jump at this like a Bogan on an esky full of Four X to give yourself the best chance for the next exam.

To Your Success,

Dr “Let the good times roll” Tom
