Dr Tom on the biggest problems people have with GAMSAT Section 1

It’s that time of the year again when everyone is starting to knuckle down with their GAMSAT prepartion for the upcoming March exam.
If you haven’t already started, then you’ll need to jump into your study ASAP.

Now one of the reasons you might be avoiding to start your study is you’re at a loss as to where begin.

This article is going to talk specifically about the prepartion for S1.
It can be a challenge to start your preparation for S1, as there is so much content, topics and unpredictable topics to cover that can throw you completely off.

There’s drama, cartoons, fiction, non-fiction, poetry and then on top of that, they’re really long passages, which are dense and it takes a long time to get through it all (who here agrees with me, right?!)

The language is complicated, and timing is a struggle with how long the passages are and so people are just at a loss when it comes to S1.

So firstly let’s talk about timing for S1 because this is a big one for most people.

Timing is a factor of two things:
1) how quickly you can read in general
2) how quickly you can understand what you’ve read

and it’s the second point that’s the biggest struggle with most people as it takes them a long time to understand what they’ve just read and it’s not just because it’s long passage but because of the language and the density of the text.

So the timing factor is more of an issue with comprehension because you’re struggling to understand the information which therefore in return affects how quickly you can get through the questions.
