Comparing Yourself To Others Doing The GAMSAT?

Comparing Yourself To Others Doing The GAMSAT?

One of the negative traits of being as competitive and ambitious and many of us are is…

Comparison.

What are they doing?

Am I doing as well as they are?

Better? Worse?

Am I good enough or better? Why not?

In itself, it’s not a problem and can sometimes even be motivating. Mainly as a kick up the butt if you’re not doing any work.

But that’s rare.

Instead, comparison pretty much always works against you because it leads to beating yourself up, stressing yourself out, distracts you from the tasks that matter, makes you feel like crap, causes you to second guess yourself, your actions, your abilities, and even the people around you.

It’s a very fast spiral into the depths of self-pity and de-motivation.

So as a general rule we suggest you don’t do it.

Ever.

The problem is that we’re kind of like addicts with this stuff. You think, “no, I’m not that bad. I can control it. I can stop at any time.”

Nekminut…

You’re in the depths of it and don’t even know what’s going on, except that you feel like a total loser and are blaming yourself and the world for all your apparent failings. Feeling totally incompetent and starting to think about doing the GAMSAT as a ‘trial’.

Might sound a tad dramatic, but if we’re honest, it’s not.

So do everything in your power to proactively and preemptively prevent it. We regularly say this to our Bootcampers.

What you’ve got to realize is that everyone doing this exam is different.

Some people preparing for the GAMSAT are doing Marchy, others Sept, and a handle full don’t even know yet.

Some are working full-time, part-time, shift work, FIFO, or not at all.

Others have kids, travel, illnesses, or uni.

Some have backgrounds stronger in the sciences, have done the GAMSAT before, and some never at all.

We’ll often say one thing to one person and a different thing to another because they are each in a different situation.

It’s like comparing apples with a giraffe.

As the common yet accurate cliche says:

You’ve got to run your own race.

Focus on what you have to do.

Focus on applying the feedback and guidance you are receiving in your preparation or from your team.

If you’re not doing enough work, they’ll tell you.

If you need to make some changes, they’ll also tell you.

This is what we do for our Bootcampers.

Support each other – yes.

Encourage each other – yes.

Help each other – yes.

But don’t compare because it doesn’t work for you. It works against you.

If you don’t have any of this support…

Or if you’re comparing because you just don’t know what you should be doing, if you’re doing it right, what the right thing for you is, or if you’re doing enough, then have a chat with our team.

They’ll have a conversation with you and show you what ‘your race’ means and how it should look.

They will remove the stress, the fear of the unknown, and the comparisonitis so that you are on the right track to achieve the result you want in March 2021.
